Two construction workers were seriously injured Wednesday night when a Severn woman drove into them while they were closing off a lane for roadwork, Anne Arundel County police said.
The employees of Peak Inc. were setting up traffic cones in the northbound lanes of Route 175 at Walker Drive in Severn for a State Highway Administration project. They had finished about a half mile when a 1994 Sierra pickup truck entered the lane and struck them, police said.
Walter I. Gonzalez-Lopez, 56, of Baltimore and Edin O. Romero-Maldonado, 19, were taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Gonzalez-Lopez suffered critical injuries, while Romero-Maldonado sustained serious injuries.
The driver, Valerie Helen Matthews, 63, was not injured. No charges were filed, but police said an investigation is continuing.
Police said the preliminary findings showed the driver caused the accident when she drove into the lane, and that alcohol may have been a contributing factor. She was given a Breathalyzer test, although the results were not released.
The county State’s Attorney’s Office will review the findings for possible charges.
