The TTCTM course may be hosted at your company’s location upon request. There is a minimum requirement of 20 people and you must be able to provide AV equipment. MTBMA and SHA are not responsible for providing meals.

The Flagger, First Aid/CPR, OSHA-10 & OSHA-30, and other safety courses are available upon request at MTBMA’s office.

Aggregate Technician (Soils & Aggregate)
This is a self-guided course using the below linked technician manual provided by Maryland State Highway Administration’s Mid-Atlantic Region Technician Certification Program. Certification in this course requires successful completion of a written exam.

Erosion & Sediment Control Yellow Card
The Basic Erosion and Sediment (ESC) Course (Yellow Card) is mandatory for contractor superintendents and ESC managers and is highly recommended for contractor project managers. This class covers the Basic Science of Erosion and Sediment Control, Installing and Maintaining E & S controls, Using the E & S Quality Assurance checklist to monitor compliance, and the Design Modification Process.

Fall Prevention for Transportation Contractors
Aimed at preventing occupational deaths and injuries associated with falls in highway, street and bridge construction, this multi-faceted program includes comprehensive training and information on: horizontal life lines; swing falls; anchorage points; fall prevention ensemble components and selection; self-retracting lifelines; aerial work platforms; rescue and suspension trauma; mounting and dismounting equipment; and walking and working surfaces.

First Aid/CPR
Individuals who successfully complete this course will receive National Safety Council (NSC) Certification. Content will include Basic Life Support for adults, CPR procedures, AED usage, acting in an emergency, how to identify and handle chest pains and heart attacks, applying care for bleeding, wounds, and sudden illnesses, and more.

Flagger Certification
This 4-hour course meets the basic requirements of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).  Individuals will learn and understand the standard skillset of a safe and effective flagger, why proper flagger operations are important, how to apply standard flagger control references, identify proper flagging signals and procedures, and the standard flagger practices for various types of situations. A laminated flagger certification card will be mailed to individuals after successful completion of the course.

OSHA 10 & 30
Individuals will learn the recognition, avoidance, and prevention of safety and health hazards in their workplaces.

Preventing Runovers & Backovers–Internal Traffic Control
Developed in partnership with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and OSHA, this 3-hour course explains for contractors and their employees how they can help reduce fatalities and accidents in the roadway construction industry by separating trucks and heavy machines from workers on foot in the work zone and creating an internal traffic control plan. Surveys of participants have shown this course substantially improves organization and safety behavior in the work zone. This course requires a minimum of 20 students, but no more than 40 per class.

Roadway Safety+
Developed through a series of contracts with FHWA and OSHA, Roadway Safety+ is the most widely vetted, vertically integrated and most advanced interactive software for road construction safety. This 2- to 16 hours (2 days) course can be tailored according to the needs of the students. It contains 35 interactive training modules, 29 toolbox pamphlets, five trainee booklets, 13 guidance documents, and two instructor guides. A minimum of 20 students per class is required.

COMING SOON! Safe Backing & Spotting
Prepare for new OSHA regulations with this comprehensive training program designed exclusively for transportation contractors and their employees. This 4-hour course is focused on training workers to avoid dangerous traffic areas on roadway construction sites, to recognize hazards surrounding equipment, and to provide clear communication between drivers/operators and spotters through the use of standardized signals and communication.

Temporary Traffic Control  (Introductory) 
This self-guided introductory course is ideal for those seeking to certify as a Traffic Manager, but are new to the field. It is encouraged to review this course prior to taking the Traffic Manager’s course to learn and understand the material, design and layout of Temporary Traffic Control devices and work zone typical applications. Temporary Traffic Control Traffic Manager Course
This one day 8-hour course is designed for field supervisors providing Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) for work zones. Individuals will be provided a course manual with instructional material and learn the fundamentals of TTC and SHA’s Standards and Specifications and typical applications, perform small group problem solving exercises, and complete a written examination at the end of the course.

  • Successful completion requires a 70% or higher on exam.
  • Individuals who receive a grade of 66% or 68% are eligible for one free retest.
  • Individuals who receive a grade lower than a 66% must retake the entire class.
  • Exam results will be available online within 10 business days from the date of the training course. 
  • Certificates will be mailed to the address provided with your registration.
  • Certification is valid for 4 years from date of successful course completion.

TTCTM Book of Standards

The Book of Standards is maintained by Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA)’s Office of Highway Development to provide Engineering Personnel and Contractors with a complete and up-to-date catalog of Standards for Highways, Incidental Structures and Traffic Control Applications by and for the MDOT SHA.

*Hard copies of the book are no longer being printed to sell and only given to those attending the TTCTM course. Updates to the manual will only be available on SHA’s website.
