Traffic Barrier Certification Exam - Government Rate
About: This is the Traffic Barrier Certification Exam only. This rate is solely for government employees who currently obtain a Traffic Barrier Certification from another state or comparable entity and wish to become certified in Maryland.
If you do not currently have a Traffic Barrier Certification from another state, you will need to register for the in-person class. You can view the upcoming dates for Traffic Barrier classes on the MTBMA calendar here: Upcoming Traffic Barrier Classes.
Prerequisites: This exam is only for individuals who hold a Traffic Barrier Certification from another state/certification course and wish to become certified in Maryland. In order to be eligible to bypass the in-person 7-hour class and take the exam directly, the following must be met:
- Registrants must provide proof of their comparable certification. Upon registering you will be prompted with a link to upload your certificate.
- Additionally, eligible registrants will have taken the manufacturer training for each product. Upon registering you will be prompted to upload all five certificates at the link. Eligible manufacturer certifications include:
- MAX-Tension Median Installation – Lindsay Corp.
- MATT Median Attenuating TREND Terminal – Valtir LLC
- SoftStop System – Valtir LLC
- MFLEAT Training Course – Road Systems Inc.
- MSKT Training Course – Road Systems Inc.
Details about this exam:
- This exam contains 50 questions from the SHA Traffic Barrier Certification Class, the proprietary end treatment installation manuals, and the Maryland Book of Standards for Highways and Incidental Structures. It covers design installation, or inspection of construction/maintenance of traffic barrier w-beam and end treatments in Maryland.
- This is an open-book test; ensure you have access to these resources, you will need them.
- You will have two (2) hours to answer all questions in sequential order. That means that you will not be able to skip a question or return to a question. Once you start the test you will not be able to pause time.
- You have two attempts to take the test. A grade of 80% or higher will be considered passing. If both exam attempts are failed the individual must register and pay the fee to take the course again.
- After registration, the exam information will be made available within 2 business days. The course can then be accessed at will, day or night.
- Training is not available on an iPad, phone, or other handheld device; it must be done on a laptop or desktop computer. The Google Chrome browser must be used to access the training.
- Certification is valid for 3 years from the time the exam is successfully completed.
- Registration for the online exam is valid for 6 months. If the exam is not completed during that time the registration is forfeited and expired.

If you do not currently hold a compatible Traffic Barrier Certification you can register for the in-person Course and Exam on the event calendar. The five manufacturer product certifications are still a required prerequisite. Individuals who do not pass the exam with the two attempts provided will need to register for the course and exam to try again.
