Traffic Barrier Certification Exam
About: This is the Traffic Barrier Certification Exam only. This exam is for individuals with experience design, installation, or inspection of construction/maintenance of traffic barrier w-beam and end treatments in Maryland.
Prerequisites: This exam is only for individuals who hold a Traffic Barrier Certification from another state/certification course and wish to become certified in Maryland. To be eligible to bypass the in-person 7-hour class and take the exam directly, the following must be met:
- Registrants must provide proof of their comparable certification. Upon registering you will be prompted with a link to upload your certificate.
- Additionally, eligible registrants will have taken the manufacturer training for each product. Upon registering you will be prompted to upload all five certificates at the link. The required manufacturer certifications include:
- MAX-Tension Median Installation – Lindsay Corp.
- MATT Median Attenuating TREND Terminal – Valtir LLC
- SoftStop System – Valtir LLC
- MFLEAT Training Course – Road Systems Inc.
- MSKT Training Course – Road Systems Inc.
Details about this exam:
- This exam contains 50 questions from the SHA Traffic Barrier Certification Class, the proprietary end treatment installation manuals, and the Maryland Book of Standards for Highways and Incidental Structures.
- This is an open-book test; ensure you have access to these resources, you will need them.
- You will have two (2) hours to answer all questions in sequential order. That means that you will not be able to skip a question or return to a question. Once you start the test you will not be able to pause time.
- You have two attempts to take the test. A grade of 80% or higher will be considered passing.
- After registration, the exam information will be made available within 2 business days. The course can then be accessed at will, day or night.
- Training is not available on an iPad, phone, or other handheld device, it must be done on a laptop or desktop computer.
- The Google Chrome browser must be used to access the training.
- If both exam attempts are failed the individual must register and pay the fee to take the course again.
- Certification is valid for 3 years from the time the exam is successfully completed.
- Registration for the online exam is valid for 6 months. If the exam is not completed during that time the registration is forfeited and expired.

If you do not currently hold a compatible Traffic Barrier Certification you can register for the in-person Course and Exam on the event calendar. The five manufacturer product certifications are still a required prerequisite. Individuals who do not pass the exam with the two attempts provided will need to register for the course and exam to try again.
