On Wednesday, the House approved a three month extension of current federal highway spending public transportation, and safety programs.  The bill,  H.R. 3617, was approved 335 to 85 exceeding the two-thirds majority needed.

Some Republican leadership opposed the extension for several reasons including the new measure does not include a repeal of the $8.7 billion highway contract authority rescission required to occur on September 30.

The three-month extension now awaits action in the Senate, which until this week appeared to join the Obama administration in wanting an eighteen month extension, through March 2011.
