Hall of Leadership

"William “Bill” F. Childs, IV began his career in the construction industry in 1976 with S.M. Christhilf & Son. Prior to this new role, Bill earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from University of Lynchburg and is a graduate of St. Paul’s School in Brooklandville, MD. After devoting 16 years to S.M. Christhilf & Son, Bill joined Chaney Enterprises in 1992 as vice president of sales and marketing, was promoted to president in 1998, and has served as CEO since 2000.

Chaney Enterprises, founded in 1962, is a ready-mix concrete, aggregates, custom blends, and related construction supplies provider. From its headquarters in Gambrills, MD, the company operates 24 ready-mixed concrete plants, nine sand and gravel facilities – supplying to customers throughout Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Delaware.

Under Bill’s leadership, Chaney Enterprises experienced tremendous growth, including two major acquisitions, the largest in the company’s history. Acquiring Dunkirk Supply (now BuilderUp) and PCS Concrete, Chaney Enterprises became the largest family-owned, ready-mix concrete and sand and gravel producer in the Mid-Atlantic by revenue, sales, and volume. Furthermore, Bill also lead the acquisitions of both Sussex Sand and Gravel and Seaford Concrete Products.

During Bill’s tenure, Chaney Enterprises grew its capacity to ship via barge at its Sussex Barge Terminal, delivering natural sand and gravel throughout the Mid-Atlantic. In addition, with Bill's guidance, Chaney Enterprises introduced new concrete products and solutions, such as CarbonCure technology and Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) construction, that have made a significant positive impact on sustainability and environmentalism, a large focus of the company.

Bill firmly believes, "the ultimate job of any leader is to ensure long-term sustainability and success of the enterprise or venture they are leading."

"I have completed my service to all these people and entities,” Bill said. “I am retiring from Chaney Enterprises and our affiliated companies feeling completely fulfilled and very proud of our collective accomplishments over the years.”

Bill has served on various boards including the RMC Research and Education Foundation, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Concrete Sustainability HUB (MIT CSHUB) Advisory Council, Maryland Transportation Builders and Materials Association, and the Eugene Chaney Foundation among others. He served as chairman of the National Ready Mix Concrete Association and president of the Maryland Ready Mix Concrete Association.

Bill has also received various professional awards to include, but not limited to; Daily Record – 2019 Most Admired CEO of a Company Between 500 and 1,000 Employees in MD and NSSGA – Lifetime Achievement Award.

Francis "Hall" Chaney, III, president of Chaney Enterprises recently expressed, “Bill Childs is an exemplary mentor and leader and he is to be commended for all that he has done for our company, our industry, and the communities where we do business. Our company is positioned well for long-term sustainability thanks to Bill’s leadership, the culture he developed, and the team he assembled. We look forward to continuing to advance our business for years to come."

Bill is a resident of southern Anne Arundel County, where he lives with his supportive and encouraging wife, Vicki Childs of 38 years – playing a key role in Bill’s success.

Effective October 4, 2019, Bill has since retired as CEO from Chaney Enterprises, but plans to continue to serve as a director of the company.
