About the Traffic Barrier Class:

This is a one-day, 7-hour in-person class geared towards individuals with some experience doing design, installation, or inspection of construction/maintenance of traffic barrier w-beam and end treatments in Maryland. The class provides an overview of design criteria and installation requirements to safeguard driver safety.

Course Content:

  1. Roadside Safety Problem, Clear Zone and Warrants for Barrier – Brief description of the run-off road (ROR) problem in Maryland, short discussion of the Clear Zone concept, and the challenge of determining when barrier is needed.
  2. Testing Requirements and Performance Characteristics of Common Barrier Systems – Outline the crash testing guidelines and performance characteristics of the various barrier systems used in Maryland.
  3. Testing Requirements and Performance Characteristics of Common End Treatments and Crash Cushions – Outline the crash testing guidelines and performance characteristics of the various systems used in Maryland.
  4. Traffic Barrier Design, Length of Need and Site-specific Conditions – Provide guidance for selecting the barrier type and creating an optimal design based on the five design principles, a quick field check of Length of Need, and some site-specific special designs.
  5. Traffic Barrier/End Treatment Installation and Common Errors – Illustrate proper barrier installation and show some common installation errors.
  6. Maintenance of Systems – Discuss various damage scenarios and their effect on barrier functionality.
  7. Proprietary End Treatments Installation Manuals and Checklist – Instruction on how to use manufacturer installation manuals and the installation checklist to ensure proper performance of the end treatments.

Prerequisites:

Eligible registrants will have taken the manufacturer training for each product. Upon registering, you will be prompted to send your 5 certificates to training@mtbma.org. These 5 manufacturer certifications are:

Once you send over the certificates to training@mtbma.org, they will be reviewed within 2 business days. Once they are approved, you will be officially registered for the class. A training handout and confirmation will be sent to your e-mail that you register with the day prior to your class date. Lunch is provided at the in-person class.

Details about the exam:

  • After you take the class, you will be provided with the information to take the online exam within 2 business days.
  • This exam contains 50 questions, all from the SHA Traffic Barrier Certification Class, the proprietary end treatment installation manuals, and the Maryland Book of Standards for Highways and Incidental Structures. 
  • This is an open-book test; ensure you have access to these resources; you will need them. 
  • You will have two (2) hours to answer all questions in sequential order. That means that you will not be able to skip a question or return to a question. Once you start the test you will not be able to pause time. 
  • You have two attempts to take the test. A grade of 80% or higher will be considered passing.
  • The course can then be accessed at will, day or night, and will be forfeited (expire) 6 months from the date of enrollment.
  • Training is not available on an iPad, phone, or other handheld device, it must be done on a laptop or desktop computer. 
  • The Google Chrome browser must be used to access the training.
  • Certification is valid for 3 years from the time the exam is successfully completed.
  • If both exam attempts are failed, you must register and pay the fee to take the in-person class again.

For individuals who have a comparable certification from another state, you have the option to go straight to the certification exam without taking the formal class.  All other certification prerequisites must still be met, with the addition of providing proof of your other state's traffic barrier certification.
